Lap of the Lakes – Rydal

By February 19, 2018 No Comments

A couple of friends put together a challenge back in 2915 to circumnavigate 17 different waters, tarns and Lake that make up the Lake District. The list goes:

Brotherswater, 2.3 miles,
Rydal water, 2.3 miles
Grasmere, 2.7 miles
Loweswater, 3.8 miles
Buttermere, 4.3 miles
Elterwater, 4.5 miles
Esthwaite water, 5.4 miles
Ennerdale 6.6 miles
Crummock Water 7.4 miles
Wastwater 7.8 miles
Hawsewater 10 miles
Thirlmere 10 miles
Derwent water 10.4 miles
Coniston water 14.7 miles
Bassenthwaite 15.5 miles
Ulswater 20 miles
Windermere 26.5 miles

The mileage is their rough guess. In 2018 I plan on completing the Lap of the Lakes challenge. I will run different routes, not always the shortest but I will hope to achieve something different with each run. Last week I fancied a longer run so opted to run from Low Wood Bay Hotel. The route was great, flat and fast. I was tied to take it easy but the route begs your legs to go faster, it was hard to consciously slow the pace down. The weather and light was good. Heading up to Waterhead and then skirting under Loughrigg, the mountains were still wearing a fresh winter ps blanket of snow and being half term holidays there were more people around than what we have been used to of recent. Great to circumnavigate one of the most picturesque waters in the lakes nestled between nab scar the start of the Fairfield horseshoe to the North and the sprawling undulating ground of Loughrigg to the South. Returning via Rydal and Ambleside. A good way to spend an hour or two.

Lap one ✅
